Years in planning, scripting, pre-production, prinipal photography and now post-production, it has been revealed that Peter Jackson’s THE HOBBIT trilogy has cost around $561 million to make… so far. The figure, which is around double what the acclaimed ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy cost to bring to the screen, as you can see, was a massive gamble for executives at Warner Brothers, but it now looks like that gamble will pay-off.

Despite the huge figure, the first movie in the trilogy, which has already been released, THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, made a whopping $1 billion in worldwide gross; and that’s just one movie. It’s safe to see that the studio will see a massive return with two movies still to go, ‘Desolation Of Smaug’ to hit this December and ‘There And Back Again,’ next December.

The figures have been released after reports were filed in New Zealand late last week.

‘The Lord Of The Rings’ trilogy brought in nearly $3 billion for the studio through the early part of the noughties, peaking with ‘Return Of The King’ in 2003, which made $1.1 billion in worldwide box-office gross making it one of the most successful films of all time.
