Sandra Bullock Refuses To Return For ‘The Heat’ Sequel

This summer saw 20th Century Fox score a major hit with female buddy action-comedy THE HEAT, which paired Sandra Bullock with BRIDESMAIDS scene-stealer Melissa McCarthy as two cops determined to crack a drug and murder case. Despite an R-rating, the film opened with a surprisingly monster $40 million and went on to gross $224 million worldwide. On a budget of only $43 million! It wasn’t long before Fox confirmed a sequel was in the works with director Paul Feig announcing he’d return alongside screenwriter Katie Dippold.

Fans hoping for a continuing franchise with the mismatched duo are going to be sadly disappointed as Bullock has confirmed, while promoting Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi space epic GRAVITY, that she won’t return for that sequel.

I’m not doing a sequel to ‘The Heat.’ I’ve done two sequels. They were horrible.

The two sequels she’s referring to are MISS CONGENIALITY 2 and SPEED 2. She’s right, both were woeful, while their originals were enjoyable smash hits. This doesn’t mean a sequel is dead but replacing one the biggest female stars on the planet is going to be a tough ask for Feig and crew.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

What a shame! For someone who basically does the same movie over and over again 80% of the time, refusing something a bit different under the pretense that it’s a sequel is somewhat uncalled for. Recently, she seemed to have a desire to escape her endless string of lame rom-coms, so turning this down is a bad move. Then again, Gravity is coming and it probably will draw a host of original scripts towards her, so there’s still hope for Ms. Bullock.
