‘The Simpsons’ Will Kill Off A Character & Cross-Over With Futurama

The SimpsonsThis year marks the 25th season of The Simpsons and with it comes some big shocks and surprises. Premiering this Sunday in the US, the producers plan to kill off a character this year. It wouldn’t be the first time, as Maude Flanders was killed off 14 years ago. A fact that makes me feel very old indeed. Dr. Nick Riviera was also killed off in THE SIMPSONS MOVIE. Although the huge cast of characters means that the list of potential victims is high, the producers have given us a clue. During a phone conference with the press, executive producer Al Jean said:

I’ll give you a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won’t say who it is.

This could mean that it’s any of the characters voiced by Dan Castellaneta (also won for voicing Homer), any of the characters voiced by Hank Azaria (also won for playing Apu), Sideshow Bob, Mrs. Krabappel, Lisa, Marge, Patti, Selma, Marge’s Mom, and Bart.

It’s not exactly a small list, but my bet would be Apu. He’s dodged death enough times, and it would be quite emotional for his wife to bring up 8 children by herself. Especially after having to move to a new country after the wedding. Krabappel would be too cruel on Ned (after having lost Maude), and I think the Simpson family are safe. Although the death of Patti or Selma could have a big impact.

The show returns this Sunday, with a spoof of Homeland in which Lisa fears that Homer has been turned by terrorists. The season will also see a season finale where The Simpsons will cross over with Futurama. All of this, plus a Treehouse Of Horror opening created by Guillermo Del Toro. It sounds like a very exciting season, and although it still doesn’t hold the same excitement for me that it once did, they have certainly grabbed my attention.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
