A few months ago we brought you news that ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER and WANTED director Timur Bekmambetov was being eyed as a potential candidate to helm MGM’s remake of Biblical epic BEN-HUR. Well, after mulling it over, the studio have indeed chosen the Russian-Kazakh filmmaker who made his name with startling supernatural thriller and international smash, NIGHT WATCH.
MGM are hopping on the Biblical bandwagon with the likes of Darren Aronofsky’s NOAH and Ridley Scott’s EXODUS due next year and want their own telling of the Christ story based on Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. It was previously adapted for the big-screen in William Wyler’s 1956 classic starring Charlton Heston. Bekmambetov will direct from a script by THE WAY BACK’s Keith Clarke.
Who would be your choice for the title role?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
