Garrett Hedlund has joined the cast of the Angelina Jolie directed UNBROKEN which chronicles the life of  an Olympic runner who was taken prisoner by Japanese forces during World War II.  The lead role of Louis Zamperini has already been announced as going to THE LIABILITY and Skins star Jack O’Connell and Hedlund will play a fellow prisoner at the camp where Zamperini is taken as a prisoner.

UNBROKEN is based on the non-fiction book by Laura Hillenbrand whose previous novel, Seabiscuit, was turned into the 2003 sporting drama of the same name.  On board to tackle the screenplay are Ethan and Joel Coen whose writing has previously won them several Academy Awards (NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, FARGO).

Hedlund first appeared on the big screen back in 2004 alongside Brad Pitt in Wolfgang Petersen’s TROY. He graduated to leading man status for TRON: LEGACY in 2010 and will reprise his role in the recently announced sequel.  Last seen as free-spirited Dean Moriarty in Walter Salles’ adaptation of ON THE ROAD, Hedlund will next be seen in the Coen brothers INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS which won the Grand Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. 2014 is already looking strong for the actor with the directorial debut from WORLD WAR Z and THE KINGDOM screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan, VIOLENT TALENT, recently confirmed.

UNBROKEN also stars Domhnall Gleeson (ABOUT TIME) and Finn Wittrock (All My Children) and is due to open in the US 25th December 2014.
