THN have received news that there’s another new version on the way for a classic book and this time it’s FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD. This time around, it’s the rather wonderful Fox Searchlight Pictures behind the production and they’ve announced that Thomas Vinterberg’s film has begun principal photography in the UK.
There’s an impressive cast attached with the likes of Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts (RUST AND BONE), Michael Sheen, Tom Sturridge (ON THE ROAD) and Juno Temple (KILLER JOE). The script was written by David Nicholls, author and screenwriter of ONE DAY and STARTER FOR TEN, so you’ve got a pretty good idea of the style we’re looking to expect. The film will shoot on location in Dorset, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London. Director Vinterberg had this to say
“I am excited to be working with DNA, Fox Searchlight and this talented cast and crew. It is a great privilege to bring such a wonderful piece of very English literature to the screen.”
Allon Reich and Andrew Macdonald, who are producing, of DNA Films added:
Far from the Madding Crowd is one of the most enduring and captivating stories in English literature. David Nicholls’ script beautifully captures the heart of Hardy’s original and we are thrilled to be bringing it to the big screen with Thomas Vinterberg. It is very exciting to be working with Carey Mulligan again, as well as an exceptional cast and crew all round.”
The film is, of course, based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of Bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love – as well as the human ability to overcome hardships through resilience and perseverance.
THN will keep you up-to-date as and when!
