Michelle Williams To Make Broadway Debut In ‘Cabaret’

Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams is to make her Broadway debut next year starring alongside Alan Cummings in a revival of cult musical production Cabaret.  The actress, nominated for 3 Academy Awards for her film performances, will play the role of Sally Bowles – made famous by Liza Minnelli in the 1972 film of the same name.

The revival will see SKYFALL and BOND 24 director Sam Mendes re-team with Rob Marshall to recreate their production which garnered much praise in 1998 and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and winning 4 including Best Musical and Best Actor for Cummings.

The original design team will also return for the production which will be housed at the Kit Kat Klub at Studio 54 on Broadway.

Here’s what the Todd Haimes of the creative team behind the production had to say about the revivial:

Cabaret is one of the greatest musicals in American musical theatre history. A classic like Cabaret should be seen at least every decade in the same way we see classic plays like A Streetcar Named Desire and The Glass Menagerie. Our production opened 15 years ago in a seminal production directed by Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall and showcased a Tony Award-winning performance by Alan Cumming. Sam, Rob and Alan bring back 15 years of experience and perspective to this material. I am excited to experience the production with an all new cast including Michelle Williams who I know will make an exceptional Sally Bowles’.

Director Sam Mendes also added:

‘I’m delighted to be stepping back into the Kit Kat Klub one more time, and to be having the opportunity to re-explore and re-discover this extraordinary musical alongside two equally extraordinary performers.’

Cabaret features a book by Joe Masteroff, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. It is based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood.  It will run for a limited period of 24 weeks with previews beginning March 21st 2014.
