We’re hearing Oscar winning Hollywood legend and ladies man Jack Nicholson has now officially retired from acting after an iconic career spanning over five decades. It’s been indicated Nicholson is struggling with beginnings of memory loss, leading him to this decision. Nicholson last appeared in 2010s lukewarm romantic comedy HOW DO YOU KNOW, which featured Paul Rudd and Reese Witherspoon.
Nicholson has a total of 12 Academy Award nominations (8 for Best Actor and 4 for Best Supporting Actor) and was winner for 1976s ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEXT, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT in 1984 and finally 1996s AS GOOD AS IT GETS. He’s cemented as one of Hollywood’s greats after legendary roles in EASY RIDER, BATMAN, THE SHINING and Scorcese’s Oscar-winner crime-classic THE DEPARTED.
It’s thought Nicholson was most-recently offered the lead role in Alexander Payne’s critically-acclaimed road movie, NEBRASKA, reuniting him with his ABOUT SCHMIDT director but had to turn it down because of his struggles in remembering lines. The role eventually went to Bruce Dern. He’s now expected to settle for a quiet life in his Los Angeles home.
What was your favourite Nicholson performance?
***UPDATE*** The report coming out of Screenrush is being brushed off as sources close to the actor say talk of his retirement are “100% false” and the actor is “actively reading scripts and looking forward to his next project.”
We await official confirmation but at 76 years-old they may well be plenty more life left in him?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

Better to retire while still being a great actor, rather than fade into oblivion with lousy parts and scandals. We’ll miss you, Jack; but good for you!
