A24 films, the company in charge of distribution for Franco’s recent SPRING BREAKERS, have began a new campaign in hopes to land him a best supporting actor nomination at this years academy awards. It’s not unusual to see this kind of campaigning as oscar season roles around, but for a film and a role like this it’s certainly an idiosyncratic attempt to win a bump in DVD sales. In the movie, James Franco plays a sinister corn-rowed gangster rapper named Alien.
The campaign materials, that are soon to be released, feature the slogan ‘Consider This Shit as Franco’s character is seen holding an oscar statuette in each hand. The line is a reference to dialogue in the film said by Alien as he egotistically boasts about his fancy wares, or his Shit! A spokes person for A24 said:
“James Franco has created a character so indelible it deserves recognition. We are excited to be able to support it with a campaign and know the impact of Alien will last far past this awards season.” Speaking on the gangstery slanginess of the campaign the spokesperson said “We plan to create an awards campaign that is thematically consistent with the film itself.”
The PR buzz is set to continue swiftly as the actor is roasted on comedy central tonight by a host actors, comedians and prominent members of ‘The Rat Pack’
