The adaption of Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel began principal photography this week in Shreveport, Louisiana. Director Gilles Paquet-Brenner (SARAH’S KEY) is at the helm.
Starring Oscar winner Charlize Theron (MONSTER, PROMETHEUS), DARK PLACES tells the story of Libby Day (Theron), a woman who survived the massacre of her family at age seven. She is approached by a group of investigators who wish to question her memory of the traumatic event. The film takes shape as a series of flashbacks from the point of view of Libby’s dead family all centered around the murderous event. Libby is forced to examine the events of that fateful day and sift repressed truth from distorted memory.
The novel’s themes centre on the dark side of human nature and include murder, prostitution, pedophilia, Satanism and substance abuse. It’ll be interesting to see the level to which Hollywood explores these motifs and how well it reflects the novel.
DARK PLACES also stars Nicholas Hoult (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS), Chloë Grace Moretz and Emmy Award-nominated actress Christina Hendricks (Mad Men). The film is due for release late next year.

Sounds a bit like The Hole for grown-ups (Nick Hamm’s 2001 film, not the one by Joe Dante). Yummy!
