The co-creator of the SAW and INSIDIOUS franchises, Australian actor/writer/producer Leigh Whannell, has given some information on his upcoming solo science-fiction thriller he is currently writing. We’ve known very little about the previously untitled project, now officially titled STEM, but while promoting INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2, a few more details have emerged. With his frequent partner James Wan now prepping FAST & FURIOUS 7, Whannell offered the following:

It’s a sci-fi film in the vein of the Terminator, set in the near future. At the moment it’s got the Spierig brothers attached to direct, so we might shoot it in Australia and make it kind of an Aussie genre dream team.

The Spierig Brothers are the twin siblings Michael and Peter, probably best known for 201os neon vampire/action yarn DAYBREAKERS starring Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe. It’s also worth mentioning their bonkers breakout UNDEAD. The duo are currently reuniting with Hawke on another sci-fi thriller, PREDESTINATION.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
