Whedon Talks ‘Age Of Ultron’ & Wright Teases ‘Ant-Man’ Tone

Few films are as anticipated as Marvel Studios sequel THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.  The monumental success of the fun-filled first film, uniting the team of an intergalactic demigod; a time-travelling super soldier; a billionaire industrialist, and a scientist we love to see getting angry, always signalled a follow-up was assured. Writer/director Joss Whedon returns to the helm and teased a plot at Comic Con with robotic villain Ultron as the antagonist this time around. In an interview with EW, Whedon gave a few points as to why the character was chosen as his main mischief maker:

As a character I love [Ultron] because he’s so pissed off. I knew right away what I wanted to do with him. He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it. He’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because, at some point, everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone who’s a witch.

Making his Marvel debut as the first film of their Phase III will be ANT-MAN. Hank Pym’s origin has been in the works for quite sometime with director Edgar Wright attached before he began work on 2009s SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD. Finally, now Wright’s completed his Cornetto trilogy, we’ll see one of Marvel’s lesser-known characters brought to the big-screen and the Brit director was asked where ANT-MAN fits into the Marvel cinematic universe and whether the tone will be reminiscent of his crazy, comedic offerings:

I think it’s just doing its own thing in the accepted history but it’s still part of the other movies and always was

In the time I’ve been working on it other things have happened in the other movies that could be affected in this. It is pretty standalone in the way we’re linking it to the others. I like to make it standalone because I think the premise of it needs time. I want to put the crazy premise of it into a real world, which is why I think “Iron Man” really works because it’s a relatively simple universe; it’s relatable. I definitely want to go into finding a streamlined format where you use the origin format to introduce the main character and further adventures can bring other people into it. I’m a big believer in keeping it relatively simple and Marvel agrees on that front.

It’s hard to say, my head’s still in ‘World’s End.’ I think it’s funny…I wouldn’t say it has any of the comedy that is in my previous but I think it’ll be in a different vein. There’ll be less swearing in it.

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is slated for cinemas 1st May 2015 and ANT-MAN is expected 6th November 2015.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
