D.J. Caruso Says Preacher Film Still Planned

While several other names have come and gone, DISTURBIA and EAGLE EYE director D. J. Caruso was attached to direct a film adaptation of the hit Vertigo comic book series by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Preacher, in 2011. Progress on the film is slow but Caruso’s name has stuck with the project and he ensures us the film does plan to go into production. While talking to I Am Rogue about his latest film, STANDING UP, Caruso mentioned that the project is still on and has just been pushed back.

“I’m still attached to Preacher and we’re wrestling with Sony because I got another movie at Sony called Invertigo, which is a big action film we’re trying to get going this summer. So Preacher got put on the back burner, but we’re still involved with Preacher and hopefully we’ll have some good news on that soon. Todd August wrote a great script. I think it’s one of those features that has to kind of go through the studio system if it’s going to be made for a certain price. So we’re kind of revisiting a way to approach making the movie in the right way.”

For those unfamiliar with Preacher, the story sees Jesse Custer, the preacher of a small Texas town, possessed by a supernatural entity called Genesis, leveling his church and giving him supernatural powers. With Genesis being the offspring of an angel and a demon Jesse sets off on a road trip across America to literally find God, claiming He has abandoned His responsibilities and is accountable for how bad the world has become. Top that off with the fact that Jesse is accompanied by his ex-hitman girlfriend Tulip and a vampire named Cassidy and you have the makings of a project that, if it does make its way to your local cinema screens, will certainly raise a few eyebrows. With INVERTIGO slated for a March 2014 release, it may be some time before we see any footage but Caruso seems to be suggesting news on the Preacher film may start to pick up speed in the near future.
