Universal Pictures has had an incredibly successful, record-breaking 2013 – so far. They’ve notched up $1.8 billion internationally, breaking last year’s $1.794 billion. It’s been the biggest year in Universal history, with still 14 releases to go, which includes three wide releases.
The big hits were LES MISERABLES at $293 million, FAST & FURIOUS 6 with a whopping $544.4 million and DESPICABLE ME 2 at $410 million, and a couple of small additions of $75.9 million from Latin film MAMA, and $197.1 million from OBLIVION, starring Tom Cruise.
FAST & FURIOUS 6 and DESPICABLE ME 2 are currently the second and third highest grossing films internationally, which says something about the recent success of franchises. FAST & FURIOUS 6 is the studio’s second highest grossing film of all time behind JURASSIC PARK.
