New Images Escape From Spike Lee’s ‘Oldboy’ Remake

The first red-band trailer from director Spike Lee’s OLDBOY certainly attempted to capture the same brutal, revenge-driven approach as the original South Korean classic from Park Chan-wook. Many expected more of a departure in keeping with Lee’s gritty and grounded style but he’s definitely sticking close to the tone of the 2003 film, itself based on the graphic-novel by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi. Can it top the gut-wretching, twisted finale of the original? Early word is Lee’s vision is even bleaker!

Check out a new set of stills just below the official synopsis.

OLDBOY is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
