Following on the wave of high seas adventures with the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN franchise and the forthcoming Starz series BLACK SAILS, NBC will bring their own pirate-themed series with CROSSBONES. The show comes from Neil Cross, creator/writer of acclaimed BBC series LUTHER starring Idris Elba, and the network has again tasked the brilliant filmmaker David Slade to direct the pilot. He did a superb job on their gripping contemporary vision of Thomas Harris’ serial-killer HANNIBAL, helming a few fantastic episodes of season 1 and serving as an executive producer on the entire run.
CROSSBONES will star John Malkovich as buccaneer Edward Teach, better known as the fearless (and feared) Blackbeard, with the events set in New Providence during 1715. The series bypassed the usual pilot testing format and was ordered to go straight-to-series. It’s expected the HARD CANDY and 30 DAYS OF NIGHT director will work around both HANNIBAL season 2 and Ronald D. Moore’s upcoming SyFy series HELIX, which he also serves as an exec producer after filming a number of episodes. Slade is also slated to direct psychological thriller THE WIDOW.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
