Bret McKenzie Is Writing A Muppet-ish Musical With Monsters

Bret McKenzie, the man behind ‘Man or Muppet’ is writing a live action musical with monsters and dragons, akin to LABYRINTH.

As fifty percent of the brilliant FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS, McKenzie has built a reputation as a gifted comedy writer and performer. With instant cult classics like ‘Business Time’ and ‘Hiphopopotamus vs Rhymenocerous’ under his belt, it’s not surprising that his talent would get scooped up by Hollywood. He provided the songs to last year’s THE MUPPETS and bagged an Oscar for his troubles. He elfs it up in THE HOBBIT as Lindir, is the romantic interest in the upcoming AUSTENLAND and, best of all, will return for THE MUPPETS MOST WANTED.

But what of his own creations? The Kiwi cutie had this to say;

‘I’m in the middle of a script. It hasn’t got a name yet but it’s a fairy tale comedy musical, sort of akin to Labyrinth or something like that.  I’m developing and that script’s halfway through. (MUPPETS co-writer and director) James Bobin’s helping me.  I’m the official writer but we’re developing it. I want to make a comedy musical with singing dragons and monsters and stuff.  (It’s) live-action, so it would be a mixture of The Muppets and The Princess Bride.’

It’s difficult not to geek out over that one, right? Will we see an appearance from Albi the Racist Dragon? If so, it won’t be for a while…

‘No title yet but it’s definitely my favorite thing I’m working on at the moment.  It’s early, though, it’s early.  It’s still developing.’

If it does come together, it’ll be the the mother flippin’ business. Time.
