We’ve certainly been experiencing Nelson Mandela deja vu of late, with not one but two biopics following the ailing legend’s early life as a revolutionist/radical. This offering, titled WINNIE MANDELA, focuses more on the great leader’s wife as she tries to keep her and her husband’s beliefs alive while he serves a lengthy prison sentence. It seems as though both this and MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM are aiming for award glory with strong performances from Jennifer Hudson and Terence Howard in the former and equally impressive acting from Naomie Harris and Idris Elba in the latter.
With Nelson Mandela facing poor health of late, it’s a nice change to remind us of and celebrate his early life, rather than the news outlets circling his hospital bed waiting to publish his obituary. However, they’ll be constant arguments over whether we really need two films and whether audiences will show up to both. WINNIE MANDELA certainly seems more female orientated, while MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM looks like it could be one for the boys with its extra focus on explosions.
WINNIE MANDELA is released on the 6th September in the US and is yet to receive a UK release date. It stars Jennifer Hudson, Terence Howard, Elias Koteas, Wendy Crewson, and Angelique Pretorius.
