‘Warcraft’ Won’t Centre Around World Of Warcraft, But Early Games.

A question that has plagued everyone’s mind since tales of affirmation began to circulate of Duncan Jones’ ‘WARCRAFT’, was whether it would follow events of World of Warcraft, the internationally best-selling MMORPG that has enticed millions. However, it seems that Jones’ third feature film will focus instead upon its predecessors, the real-time strategy parents that formed the cornerstones of the fantasy universe. This would allow for possible future sequels to focus on the substantial lore within the subsequent games.

What’s interesting is the path that Jones has decided to take with the video-game franchise, leaving us asking whether it’ll stand as one of the first critically successful video-game adaptations in recent history, or fall flat like countless many before it such as STREET FIGHTER or MORTAL KOMBAT: ANNIHILATION. According to Bleeding Cool, the transformative video game series will be adapted to reflect its universe in the same manner – one of full-fledged fantasy – as THE LORD OF THE RINGS or John Milius’ CONAN THE BARBARIAN.

Details have also surfaced that WARCRAFT’s protagonist will be that of “Khadgar”, for those familiar with the fantastical lore, he is “a young consul to the Kirin Tor senate, rulers of the city of Dalaran,” a mystical city that is the core of the ‘magi’ community, the centre of arcane study. The protagonist is tasked with investigating a series of crimes, but his journey will take him far beyond the confines of the city.

Khadgar is not the only prominent individual from games set to make an appearance, which, at present, seems promising in regards to maintaining Warcraft canon. Medivh, Khadgar’s mentor is expected to appear, with Bleeding Cool stating that he is “not quite Gandalf meets Captain Jack Sparrow, he’s actually a more morally complex character than will be at first revealed. Expect him to be a scene stealer, too.” Not to mention Medivh’s nemesis, the impressive Lothar, known as ‘The Lion of Azeroth’ and ‘leader of the King’s Army’, which will require an actor that will “carry just the right amount of pride and gravity.”

Aside from supporting roles such as the King and his lady, don’t expect to see a mere selection of human characters. Oh, no, with lore that is almost as expansive as Tolkien’s legacy, we’ll be whisked away into a world of the wondrous, with confirmation of orcs, dwarves, trolls, elves, revenants, and wraiths alongside.

With a specific release date not yet confirmed, but a general 2015 release in mind, we have plenty of time for the WARCRAFT to mature into a blissful fruition, but judging from the response to the sneak peek at Comic-Con this year, it may well be already on its way to claiming the title of ‘critical success.’
