Miramax and US cable network Starz have confirmed plans to collaborate on a small-screen project based on the studio’s acclaimed feature film, COP LAND. The 1997 gritty crime thriller followed a suburban New Jersey sheriff, played by Sylvester Stallone, who discovers his quiet town, home to countless New York cops, is actually front for mob connections and corruption. The film was directed by James Mangold and in my opinion features Stallone’s finest ever performance. It also included a jaw-dropping supporting cast of Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Peter Berg, Robert Patrick, Annabella Sciorra, Ray Liotta and many of the later cast of THE SOPRANOS.
Speaking of THE SOPRANOS, Chris Albrecht, who put brought that legendary series to HBO, is now chief at Starz so expect this COP LAND series to have the mob-centred feel. Director James Mangold will also executive produce (alongside Cathy Konrad and Adam Fields) as well as co-write the pilot with Bryan Goluboff.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
