I was a huge fan of Matt Damon’s Bourne franchise with the latter two, directed by the brilliant Paul Greengrass, breaking new ground in the thinking-mans action genre. However, when it came to spin-off/sidequel THE BOURNE LEGACY, I failed the connect with the new character of Aaron Cross and what fans ultimately got was a run-of-the-mill effort, this despite coming from the writer of the original trilogy of films, Tony Gilroy, who previously directed the gripping MICHAEL CLAYTON.
Studio talk had hoped Damon would reunite with Jeremy Renner’s Cross for another global chase after THE BOURNE LEGACY didn’t receive a positive critical response or rake in as much cash as hoped. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to coax Damon back but Renner will return with SHERLOCK HOLMES and INVICTUS’ Anthony Peckham now confirmed as the screenwriter. Universal Studios are now said to be forging ahead with a focus on Cross.
What did you think of Renner in THE BOURNE LEGACY and would you like to see more adventures from Aaron Cross. Do let us know.
Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

Loved Legacy and Aaron Cross, and very happy Renner is returning. Maybe if Greengrass comes back two things will happen – 1. Damon stops whining and comes back for a cameo and 2. Greengrass learns to hold a camera.
