Denzel Washington will be heading back to the bright lights of New York as it was revealed that he will be starring in a reboot of A Raisin In The Sun. He will star alongside Diahann Carroll, Anika Noni Rose and Sophie Okonedo.
A Raisin In The Sun follows the dreams and conflicts within three generations of the Younger family: Walter Lee (Washington), his wife Ruth (Okonedo), his sister Beneatha (Rose), his son Travis and matriarch Lena, called Mama (Carroll).
The stage version will be directed by Kenny Leon, who also directed the TV film adaptation of A Raisin In The Sun which starred Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs, Audra McDonald and Phylicia Rashad.
This will be Washington’s welcome return to Broadway; the last time was when he starred in 2010’s FENCES alongside Viola Davis, in which he won a Tony award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play. But if you don’t quite fancy waiting that long to see Washington on stage, you can see him alongside Mark Wahlberg in 2 GUNS, which opens August 16th in the UK.
