Ryan Gosling And Zac Efron In Talks For ‘Star Wars Episode VII’

With all the recent talk of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and whatever the Superman vs. Batman film ends up being called, you may have momentarily forgotten about another massive franchise that’ll be hitting screens in 2015. But forget no more, as we finally have some more casting rumours for STAR WARS EPISODE VII.

A few months ago, word on the street was that Jonathan Rhys Meyers would be up for an unknown role. Many presumed this would be something along the lines of Han and Leia’s offspring, with the sequel trilogy supposedly set 30 years after the events of RETURN OF THE JEDI. While we haven’t heard much on that front, Latino Review is reporting that none other than Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron are currently auditioning for roles in J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi sequel.

While Efron’s desired role is currently unknown, it’s not too hard to imagine that he might be up for the part originally rumoured for Meyers. He even sort of looks like a young Harrison Ford, if Harrison Ford was airbrushed and had girly hair. Gosling, on the other hand, is said to be up for the role of Luke Skywalker’s son. This is a bit of an intriguing detail in terms of the plot, as while we know Han and Leia will undoubtedly have had mini-Solos running around, we’ve no idea who Luke’s kid’s mum might be. Unless you count Mara Jade and the EU, which Episode VII apparently won’t.

This also hopefully means the Jedi of the new trilogy will be a bit more interesting than the celibate, dullard monks of the prequels, and more like the badass warrior priests we envisioned from the original trilogy. Just as long as we don’t get a repeat of the Anakin/Vader storyline, of course.

I’m quite chuffed to hear about these casting rumours. Efron has proved himself capable of roles outside the world of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL with films like THE PAPERBOY, while Ryan Gosling is Ryan Gosling, and no more really needs to be said about that. Mind you, it’s a bit difficult to imagine R-Gos swinging a lightsaber about. But if Liam Neeson can do it…

Let us know what you think about seeing Gosling and Efron in STAR WARS VII in the comments below. In the meantime, we’ll hopefully hear more details on the film at Disney’s annual D23 Expo on 9th-11th August.

I’m not a Star Wars fan (gasp!) but I would watch this repeatedly if The Gos was involved.
