First Clips From ‘The Smurfs 2’

Sony Pictures Animation have released a couple of clips for the sequel to live-action/CGI animated mix THE SMURFS. Despite growing up in an age when their squeaky-voiced popularity was bearable, few mamas and papas will have been anticipating the arrival of a sequel, again directed by genre ‘specialist’ Raja Gosnell. The plot, for those that care, goes as follows.

Gargamel creates Hackus and Vexy, a couple of evil Smurf-like creatures called the Naughties, to harness the magical Smurf essence. When he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants and that only Smurfette can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and takes her to Paris. There, with the help of the Smurf essence, Gargamel hopes to use the Eiffel Tower as an energy-generating antenna to finally return home. It is up to Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy, and Vanity to return to the human world and seek help from their friends Patrick and Grace Winslow

THE SMURFS 2 arrives in cinemas 31st July and stars Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Alan Cumming, Anton Yelchin, Sofia Vergara, Katy Perry, Hank Azaria, Brendan Gleeson, Christina Ricci and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Feel free to leave any children who ask to go tied to a telephone box like an unwanted puppy.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
