This Friday sees the release of Guillermo del Toro’s first directing gig since 2008s HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY with crushing creature-feature, PACIFIC RIM. However, the visionary director has a host of other projects in development. There is a TV adaptation of his novel series THE STRAIN as well as a small-screen version of Marvel green mean THE HULK. Perhaps even more excitingly is the gothic horror CRIMSON PEAK, but he’s also determined to bring us a new take of Mary Shelley’s dark and iconic fantasy novel, FRANKENSTEIN.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph he revealed, “he is hoping to direct Cumberbatch again in a new film version of ‘Frankenstein.’ For those not in the know, it’s expected Del Toro will shoot chiller CRIMSON PEAK next year with British thespian Benedict Cumberbatch co-starring alongside Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam, Mia Wasikowska and Jim Beaver. Frequent collaborator Doug Jones (who featured as creatures in PANS LABYRINTH and the HELLBOY franchise) is already set for the role of the monster.
Of course, Cumberbatch is no stranger to the role of Dr. Victor Frankenstein after starring opposite Jonny Lee Miller in Danny Boyle’s acclaimed stage adaptation. A role the duo alternated nightly with that of the ‘creature’, during the West End run.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
