Over 660,000 people tuned in to the return of SKINS: FIRE last night, and there was a big reason for it. Effy (played by Kaya Scodelario) is one of the key players of the SKINS generation; not only was she the longest-serving cast member but she also proved to be the ‘poster’ child for the series (you only have to type her character name into Google to find numerous Tumblr tributes). But how did our golden anti-hero pan out in the big bad world?
Actually, she has done pretty well for herself! Yes, out of all the people from the SKINS clan, Effy is now in work trying to make an honest living (well, trying to at least) in the exciting world of the stock exchange. In true SKINS fashion, all of her success seems to fall into her lap when she goes behind people’s back.
Although it’s great to see Effy back, it’s Naomi who steals the spotlight (played by Lily Loveless). While we all expected Effy to be the burnout, the writers turn it around, with Naomi spending her days getting high and trying to become a comedian. Loveless and Scodelario play off each other perfectly throughout. It all seems to be going well until right at the end of the episode, where a huge bombshell is dropped that it’s almost a bit out of character for the show. Of course, we have to remember that the over-heightened plot twists are why we fell in love with SKINS in the first place.
SKINS: FIRE shows that it is OK to grow with your audience, but it’s going to be shock to the young ‘uns out there who think their lives imitate younger Effy.
