Being a huge fan of writer/director Neill Blomkamp’s epic, political sci-fi satire DISTRICT 9, his latest sci-fi spectacle has to be one of my own most anticipated movies of the year. ELYSIUM has slowly been building buzz over the last year or so in what was initially an extremely secretive project.
The film is led by the brilliant Matt Damon as an inhabitant of an future planet Earth. Upon discovering he’s terminally ill, he volunteers for a dangerous mission to bring the two polarised worlds together – safe and pristine living conditions of the space station Elysium, where only the wealthy and healthy reside and the desperate slums of the impoverished ruined Earth.
ELYSIUM co-stars Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Diego Luna, Alice Braga, Faran Tahir and lands in US cinemas 9th August, while a later UK release date of the 20th September has been scheduled.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
