‘Hellboy 3’ Heading To Legendary?

I’m a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro’s HELLBOY franchise, despite knowing bugger all about the Mike Mignola comic-book it’s based on. For myself, it was such a fantastical and brilliant concept I bought into straight away. Surprisingly, the original 2004 film wasn’t as successful as Columbia Pictures had hoped and they subsequently sold off the sequel rights to Universal. Again, Universal themselves were not impressed with their return from a $85 million budget for 2008s THE GOLDEN ARMY and shelved any plans for that epic concluding chapter.

Lead actor Ron Perlman and del Toro have spoken before for their love to make HELLBOY 3 happen, but contractual obligations and the need for a studio to stump up the cash hasn’t been forthcoming. However, that may about to change as Legendary Pictures, who’ve recently broken away from their Warner Bros’ links and who are behind the director’s upcoming sci-fi epic PACIFIC RIM, may be interested.

Del Toro, while promoting PACIFIC RIM, hinted:

I hate giving pieces about it, but last night, we were at dinner and Ron said, ‘I would be very happy to do Hellboy again, when are we doing Hellboy 3?’  Thomas [Tull] said, ‘I would love to see Hellboy 3.’  He didn’t say he would love to do it he just said he’d like to see it, but today, I’ll ask him.

Perlman added:

Not just anybody can make this movie. I loved working for Legendary and I know for Guillermo working on Pacific Rim was one of his greatest experiences.  The reason I loved working for them is because Guillermo was so happy.  I came in six months into the shoot and he seemed as fresh as a daisy, simply because he was working for someone who appreciated and supported his outlandish visions of what he wanted to put on the screen.  My immediate, silent wish was, wouldn’t it be great if these guys came in and helped resolve the Hellboy series.

Legendary Pictures’ chief Thomas Tull was later asked if it could well be a possibility that HELLBOY 3 could happen on his watch but played down chances, and suggested rights issues that would need to be sorted out for his studio to get involved.

Would you like to see a third outing for the big red horned hero? Do let us know.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
