SDCC: Comic Con 2013: What We Know So Far… Part One, TV

con-page

For the very first time this year, The Hollywood News will be heading across the Atlantic, from London to San Diego, to attend the 2013 San Diego Comic Con. The trip is something we’ve been planning since as early as December of last year, and both myself and Craig Hunter will be delving [balls] deep into Hall H (which is apparently where all of the magic happens), to bring you daily reports from the show and beyond.

In just a few weeks time, Craig and I will be packing our bags, getting down to Thomas Cook to exchange some British pound notes for some US ‘green’ (that’s what the local currency is referred to as on the street), heading to Heathrow airport and, after tucking into a ‘full English’ and a final pint of London pride at the Wetherspoons in the departure lounge, jetting to the climbs of San Diego (via Houston) for some fanboy fun that only the Con can deliver.

It’s nearly July, and thoughts are starting to focus in on what to expect. For starters, there’s the hotel. We’ll be staying in the area, within a stone’s throw of the halls, though apparently we’ll be sharing a room, which is fine, just so long as we can decide who gets to be on top, and who’s first to hop in the shower and secretly knock one out every morning. That’s if we even get to bed folks, as I’ve heard whispers of all nighters, sex, drugs, booze and past-midnight hand-jobs from pissed up movie geeks in the corridors of the convention center.

Of course I jest, (the WAGs are probably reading this), as the Comic Con, for us, is all about the movies. Since I started the website nearly ten years ago, it has always been an ambition of mine to get to San Diego to cover the event and after meeting fellow THN-er Craig Hunter, and having various conversations with him, I found out that it was one of his too, so we’ve splashed out and managed to get our asses in to deliver the goods on our tenth anniversary year for all of our readers.

This year’s Con kicks off on Thursday, 18th July but we’ll be on the floor the day before on preview night to check things out, and hopefully bring you some juicy movie scoopage. From there we’ll bring you a short 30 minute special bonus edition of The Hollywood Booze podcast, live from California, which will be included in that week’s iTunes episode with Dave, Joe and Dan. We’ll have daily reports, live blogs and tons more. I’m so excited, and I cannot bloody hide it.

So, three and a bit weeks out, here’s what we know is going on in the halls, movie and TV wise, so far!

HANNIBAL (TV)

Hannibal - Season 1

So, the hit show HANNIBAL, which has just had a second season commissioned, will have a presence at this years show. Bryan Fuller, Hugh Dancy, David Slade and Martha De Laurentiis have all been confirmed to show up on Thursday evening in one of the halls. I love the series, and although I’m a little bit behind on season one, I’ll ensure I’m bang up to date to tuck in to this cannibalistic feast. No word as to if Mads Mikkelsen will make an appearance, but its more than likely.

BLACK SAILS (TV)

Craig is going nuts for this, despite it having Michael Bay’s name attached to it like a rancid, genital wart. We’re promised a screening of the Starz series, also on the Thursday, and after looking at the trailer (see below), it might be good enough to see me tag along too.

THE FOLLOWING (TV)

TheFollowing

The Fox series THE FOLLOWING was the first truly great new TV show of 2013, and despite it since being overshadowed by the slightly superior HANNIBAL, I still await season two with baited breath. The question is, who will show up at the Con? If its any of the cast they’re really delivering a major spoiler considering the ending of the season finale. Kevin Bacon, James Purefoy? Not the latter, as we’ve heard that Bacon, Shawn Ashmore and Valorie Curry are set to join executive producers Kevin Williamson and Marcos Siega on stage on the Thursday.

ALMOST HUMAN (TV)

almosthuman

I confess to not knowing very much about this pilot, but we know that Karl Urban, Michael Ealy and executive producer J.H. Wyman will be in San Diego on the Friday to talk up new action-drama ALMOST HUMAN, from the creators of FRINGE. The Fox produced show is set in 2048 and revolves around an unlikely partnership between a part-machine cop and a part-human robot. Have a look at this, it made my nut sack slightly tighten when I first watched it. Yes, that is McKenzie Crook off of THE OFFICE. There will also be a screening of the pilot in its entirety.

ARROW (TV)

arrow-tv

Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy, David Ramsey, Emily Bett Rickards and Colton Haynes are joining executive producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg for the ARROW panel on Saturday. It’s a firm favourite based on the comic book Green Arrow from DC Comics and hugely successful on The CW network in the US.

SUPERNATURAL (TV)

sp

Really hard to believe that SUPERNATURAL is now right season long, and indeed still going strong, also on The CW network. Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins and Mark A. Sheppard are hitting SDCC this year with executive producers Jeremy Carver and Robert Singer. They will appear on stage on Sunday.

REVOLUTION (TV)

REVOLUTION-TV-Series-Cast-Promo-620x348

So, another TV series from JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot (they also produce the aforementioned pilot ALMOST HUMAN) and no mention of the man attending the Con. Abrams attendance would be pretty big news for obvious reasons, and my sources don’t list the man as attending he REVOLUTION panel either, but we are promised series stars and creator/executive producer Eric Kripke on the Saturday of the convention.

NIKITA (TV)

Nikita

This show has been going for what seems like ages. Well, NIKITA is about to enter its final season and stars Maggie Q, Shane West, Lyndsy Fonseca, Aaron Stanford, Melinda Clarke, Devon Sawa and Noah Bean are set to join executive producer Craig Silverstein on stage on Friday. Personally, I’ve not watched a single episode, but any excuse to post the above image eh?

TEEN WOLF (TV)

Teen-Wolf-title-screen1

MTV confirmed this week that there will be a TEEN WOLF panel at the Con featuring all five series regulars and new cast members who play the twin Alpha werewolves, Max and Charlie Carver. There will also be a kick ass MTV2 Party In The Park which will be open to all Comic Con badge holders. The event will offer free food and beer, which pretty much guarantees my attendance. That event will take place at Petco Park on Thursday, July 18. MTV’s Comic Con page is the resource for more info.

THE BIG BANG THEORY (TV)

the-big-bang-theory

The press release reads; “In a panel sure to be filled with debate and discussion — and more than a few surprises — executive producers Steven Molaro and Bill Prady and the writers of The Big Bang Theory take fans behind the scenes of TV’s #1 comedy.” Fans of the show should head to the relevant halls on Friday July 19.

THE VAMPIRE DIARIES (TV)

the-vampire-diaries-cw

Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Kat Graham and Candice Accola join executive producers Julie Plec and Caroline Dries on stage on the Friday. We all know creator Kev Williamson is in town for THE FOLLOWING as previously mentioned, so who knows, the big man may make an appearance for this also.

MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. (TV)

Agents-of-Shield

Hold on to your testicles, or if you don’t own any, grab your nearest pair, as this promises to be one of the biggest, and indeed most anticipated launches of any show ever in the halls of the San Diego Convention Center. The panel presentation promises appearances from executive producer Joss Whedon and Marvel’s Head of Television and series executive producer Jeph Loeb. We’ll definitely be geeking out at what they have to offer!

SLEEPY HOLLOW (TV)

Sleepy-Hollow-Cast-FOX-600x425

Again, I will share the press release with you; and not because I’m lazy, but because I’m too darned excited to type, even though these next few sentences contain the words Len Wiseman in them: “Executive Producers Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Fringe, Spider Man 2) and Len Wiseman (Underworld, Total Recall) will unveil their highly-anticipated project with an exclusive, not-to-be-missed world premiere screening of the Pilot followed by a Q&A with fans featuring series lead Tom Mison (Parade’s End) and Nicole Beharie (42, Shame).” Set to hit Hall H on Saturday.

SON’S OF ANARCHY (TV)

Sons-Of-Anarchy-sons-of-anarchy

Kurt Sutter will take center stage with Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Ron Perlman, Maggie Siff, Kim Coates, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Theo Rossi, Dayton Callie and Jimmy Smits for a special SON’S OF ANARCHY panel on Sunday.

THE SIMPSON’S (TV)

the-simpsons

Everyone’s favourite yellow American family THE SIMPSON’S celebrate their 25th year on air and at the Con this year with creator Matt Groening, executive producer Al Jean, supervising director Mike Anderson, and consulting producer David Silverman all turning up, and we’re promised never-before seen footage from guest director Guillermo del Toro and more. Promises to be a highlight. This hits the hall on Saturday.

BREAKING BAD (TV)

breaking-bad-all-characters

We’ve not heard official word that this will be at this year’s Con, but we’ve certainly heard rumours and rumblings that the final run of episodes will get a huge publicity shot in the arm in San Diego, especially considering that the new series airs in the US in August. The show was a huge presence at SDCC last year, so we expect AMC to deliver the goods.

THE WALKING DEAD (TV)

wallpaper-the-walking-dead-season-3-copia.jpeg

Another AMC production, and a show almost equally as good and popular as the aforementioned one. It’s based on a graphic novel, it has comic origins and is always a fave in the halls. Season four of the show is so hotly anticipated that the producers will not want to let the thousands of Walking Dead fans down. Again, we’ve not heard officially, but my money is on TWD to be at SDCC 2013.

Other notable attendees for the four day event include MAD, ADULT SWIM, which has a huge presence over all four days, MURDER POLICE, BONES (including an appearance by David Boreanaz), CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL, AMERICAN DAD, FAMILY GUY, FUTURAMA, THE ORIGINALS, THE TOMORROW PEOPLE and BEWARE THE BATMAN, a new action-packed CG animated series featuring The Dark Knight.

We’ll be at the event and will strive to cover as much of these as humanly possible. Check back in a couple of days for a look at the films heading to Southern California in exactly three weeks time.

The San Diego Comic Con runs from July 17th-21st and will be covered in its entirety here on The Hollywood News.

The plural is “The Simpsons.” Don’t use the apostrophe for the simpe plural. Plural of dogs is not dog’s, of idiots is not idiot’s. English language update for Pond Leapers (not Leaper’s)!
