Jennifer Lopez Joins ‘The 33’ Chilean Miner Drama

Jennifer Lopez The 33 Chilean Mining DisasterIn 2010, tragedy struck a Chilean mining community in San Jose as a cave-in left 33 miners trapped, presumed dead. However, it soon transpired that all 33 men were alive and after 69 days the men were rescued without a single fatality. Just a year later, Hollywood producer Mike Medavoy picked up the rights and began working on a cinematic retelling. Antonio Banderas is part of the cast and now Jennifer Lopez has also joined the production. Banderas, alongside Rodrigo Santoro, will play two of the miners with Martin Sheen as a father of one of the miners. It is guessed that Jennifer Lopez will play the role of one of their wives.

THE 33 is a true and inspiring tale which will be directed by Patricia Riggen, whose film LA MISMA LUNA brought her international acclaim. Scripted by Mikko Alanne and Jose Rivera, the film is aiming for a 2014 release date.

One thing I’m wondering about: who do you buy the rights from for a real-life event like that?!
