The Stone Roses really happened just before the Britpop explosion that ruled my life in the mid-90s but their influence was everywhere in those early sounds of endless bands around in the era. The likes of Suede, Blur, The Charlatans and even Oasis had tinges of the Madchester scene that couldn’t be ignored as it took over the grip of grunge up North.
Here we’ve got the UK trailer for SPIKE ISLAND, the life-changing gathering of 27,000 people in Widnes back in May of 1990. The event at the time wasn’t exactly a perfect success due to numerous problems with sound and tech, but it lives on in the memory for many as the archetypal ‘you had to be there‘ event, and why not.
In the film version of events, it’s a nice and simple setup as we follow five 16-year-old lads from Manchester. It’s got that nostalgic feel going and they’ve entwined it with the (re-inacted) real event that’s gone down in legend. Check out the trailer:
Written by Chris Coghill and directed by Mat Whitecross, it stars Elliott Tittensor, Nico Mirallegro, Jordan Murphy and Adam Long. SPIKE ISLAND opens in the UK on June 21st. As the trailer says, think The Inbetweeners meets Quadrophenia and it could be a good laugh.
