‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Goes Villain Rumour Overload (SPOILERS!)

The-Amazing-Spider-ManOne thing that will never get old when discussing upcoming comic-book films, is hypothesising who the villains are going to be. Some films take a ‘the more the merrier’ approach, whereas others are content to leave it at one or two. But when you’re a studio like Sony, and chances of superheroic crossovers are next to nil, then you’ve gotta pull something impressive out of the bag to match films such as THE AVENGERS. So why not go a bit villain mental? This is at least what rumours are suggesting is to be set up in Marc Webb’s upcoming THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2. We already have clear confirmation that Jamie Foxx will be the main antagonist as Electro while he is backed up by Paul Giamatti’s Rhino, but we also have to remember that both Chris Cooper and Colm Feore are part of the cast, as Norman Osborn and Adrian Toomes respectively.

As all comic-book fans know, Osborn becomes The Green Goblin and Toomes becomes The Vulture. This is four villains at least heavily hinted at in a single film, and the word on the street is that they are setting up the classical villain collective known as The Sinister Six. So who could be the other two villains joining the team? Well obviously we have Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans) alive and well after his turn in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, so he’s an obvious choice to return, which leaves us with one space left. Many villains have been a part of the team before, but perhaps we’ve already seen our next villain.

Those of you that have seen the end-credits scene in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN will remember that Connors was visited in his cell by a mysterious Man In The Shadows, who some believed to be Norman Osborn. But who else do we know that can blend in with stuff? Why, it’s none other than our dear friend Chameleon. There are also some other hints that Chameleon may be involved. Chameleon uses masks to imitate others, and one recent set report from an extra noted seeing the severed head of Norman Osborn. Perhaps it was a mask of Norman Osborn that Chameleon uses to give Osborn the perfect alibi when he’s The Green Goblin.

Not only that, but Michael Massee played the role of The Man In The Shadows, and you don’t need a big name actor to play someone who looks like other characters for the majority of the time he’s on screen. We’ve also seen that Dennis Leary is back on set filming scenes despite his character, George Stacey, dying in the first film. Many will have guessed at flashbacks or dream sequences, but what if it turns out that Chameleon is messing with the minds of Stacey’s loved ones?

If Chameleon is a part of the roster, then we already have our six villains ready to unleash hell in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3. It will be a tall order, and many people complain about an overuse of villains, but since they will all have a clear part to play in the plot and are being introduced over multiple films, this could work out really well. But let’s not forget that the sequel must also juggle a second love interest in the guise of Mary Jane (Shailene Woodley) and Peter’s friendship with Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan).

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is released 2nd May 2014. It stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Sally Field, Felicity Jones, Martin Sheen, Colm Feore, Shailene Woodley, Paul Giamatti, Chris Cooper, Dane DeHaan and Jamie Foxx.
