Proud Camden Present: Fantastic ‘Withnail & I’ Photography Exhibition

2009ProudGalleries

THN are excited to share with you the news of a photography exhibition that starts on June 20th at London’s Proud Camden Gallery for WITHNAIL & I. The cult-classic is a massive favourite with many of us, and quite right to, so we’ll be checking out the show titled ‘Withnail & Me: The Finale.’

The photographs are by Murray Close with a collection of iconic shots and selected unseen prints that make up a true celebration of Withnail and Marwood. Bruce Robinson’s devilishly quotable classic, focuses on unemployed actors Withnail and Marwood (Richard E Grant and Paul McGann) as they decide to leave their squalid Camden flat for an idyllic holiday in the countryside, courtesy of Withnail’s uncle Monty’s country cottage…and you know the rest!

Murray Close was invited to shoot the cast and crew during filming in 1986. The resulting images are a joyous and revealing collection; single shots astutely summarising the weight and comedy of popular skits, and familiar characters caught off camera between scenes.

Over twenty five years since ‘WITHNAIL & I’ first graced our cinema screens and following the sad passing of actor Richard Griffiths (Withnail’s infamous Uncle Monty), Proud Camden pays tribute to the script, the actors and the photographer behind one of the most iconic films of the 20th century. Check out their website for all the details, and if you’ve got a bit of spare cash – you might be able to pick up a print of your own!
