WWE Wrestlemania 29 Blu-Ray Review

wrestlemania-29

Once a year WWE hold the self-proclaimed ‘greatest spectacle in all of entertainment’ Wrestlemania. For its 29th instalment WWE focused its efforts on The Rock Vs. John Cena, Triple H Vs. Brock Lesnar and CM Punk Vs. The Undertaker. Whilst the Rock/Cena main event disappoints the undercard is full of quality bouts to please the casual viewer and wrestling fan alike.

WRESTLEMANIA 29 takes place in the tri-state area at the MetLife Stadium and features the most elaborate and beautifully presented set in sports entertainment history. Sadly whilst the stadium impresses it also results in a lack of atmosphere, much of the chanting/booing lost to the American sky above. Fortunately the quality in-ring makes up for this with opener The Shield Vs. Randy Orton, Big Show & Sheamus setting the bar high. Since bursting onto the scene late last year The Shield have gone from strength to strength and this match elevates them yet again thanks to some tremendous teamwork. Matches pitting Ryback Vs. Mark Henry and Chris Jericho Vs. Fandango are the two missteps on the card but manage to entertain even if the excitement of the other face-offs is missing.

In terms of the big three matches the show is built around, the CM Punk/Undertaker match meets the heady expectations with ease; beautifully crafted through perfect execution of moves and psychology it will be seen in years to come as one of Wrestlemania’s greatest ever matches. Brock Lesnar/Triple H is equally exciting in a totally different way. Whilst ‘Taker/Punk had athleticism along with psychology this match is physical from the off and escalates throughout. Following a disappointingly dull battle at Summerslam the pair more than make up for it here.

On the Blu-ray and DVD you’ll have access to an enjoyable, and very long, Hall Of Fame ceremony inducting Mick Foley, Trish Stratus and Bruno Sammartino amongst others. Sadly the Madison Square Garden crowd take it upon themselves to disrespect a few of the inductors, and even one of the inductees, but this shouldn’t affect enjoyment of a special show. Blu-ray customers also get a few segments from Raw building to Wrestlemania, none of which are indispensable.

WRESTLEMANIA 29 succeeded in offering competitive, believable bouts and two out of three of the main events deliver. Whilst not to the level of Wrestlemania X7, 29 is certainly the best show since 24 in Miami and is well worth four hours of any wrestling fans time.

WWE WRESTLEMANIA 29 is released on Blu-ray and DVD June 10th via Fremantle Media

Sam is a bloody lovely lad born and raised in Bristol (he’s still there and can’t escape). Favourite films include THE LOST BOYS, DRIVE, FIGHT CLUB and COMMANDO, well pretty much any 1980s Arnie film you can throw his way…even RED SONJA. Sam once cancelled a Total Film subscription after they slagged off Teen Wolf. He resubscribed 2 days later.
