US primetime network NBC has given Bryan Fuller’s brilliant adaptation of author Thomas Harris’ cannibalistic bogeyman HANNIBAL, a 13-episode second-season renewal.
Thats great news for fans of Harris’ charming psychopath Hannibal Lecter, which is portrayed with cunning relish by a perfect Mads Mikkelsen, whose made the infamous role his own after following in the tough footsteps of Brian Cox (in Michael Mann’s masterpiece MANHUNTER) and of course, Anthony Hopkins.
An announcement was made by NBC Entertainment’s President Jennifer Salke, saying
We’re so proud of Bryan’s vision for a show that is richly textured, psychologically complex, and very compelling. There are many great stories still to be told.
The series, based on a number of the characters in Harris’ best-seller ‘Red Dragon‘, co-stars Hugh Dancy as troubled serial-killer profiler Will Graham, whose ability to connect and sympathise with the demented minds of psychopaths has led to his teaming with the ‘good’ doctor. However, his ‘gift’ has clouded his judgement as his personal and professional relationship has yet to spot his new ‘friend’ is one of the people he should be hunting.
I’m only four episodes in and it’s rich character development, top intense performances and surprisingly grisly story (certainly for a non-cable series), has me gripped!

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
