Always a controversial premise to include into any suspense-driven shocker, the ‘home-invasion’ set up has been used to great unsettling effect in the likes of FUNNY GAMES, HENRY and THE STRANGERS. Add into the mix a number of superbly creepy latex masks worn by the sadistic villains of the piece and the two will create unnerving menace in writer/director James DeMonaco’s near future-set chiller, THE PURGE.
Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey are the parents shielding their children from harm in a time when crime is at an all-time low, thanks to a 12-hour period during the year in which any and all crime is legalised. People can unleash all their pent up anger for one night. Murder? Torture? Rape? Whatever floats your boat. It’s all okay for a limited time and it’s a rather original, if troubling, concept that will be unleashed in UK cinemas this Friday and the US 7th June. Unfortunately for the Sandin’s, violence comes knocking at their door when their son comes to the rescue of a gangs target.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
