More projects are being revealed at Cannes this week, and the latest reveal has been that NO’s Gael Garcia Bernal and THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN PART 2’s Mia Maestro are set to star in EVITA. And before we start, it is just a working title, it is not a remake of the musical.
The story will be chronicling the odyssey of Eva Peron’s embalmed corpse around Europe from 1952 to its burial in Argentina 25 years later. Maestro will be playing Peron, but her role will be seen in “fragments and shadows”. Pablo Aguero, who wrote the project, said:
“In this film, I want to show what Evita generated: a massive revolt against the injustices of capitalism, followed by a repression that was disproportionate, brutal and yet unsuccessful in shutting her voice forever.”
Garcia Bernal and his production company partner Diego Luna are set to coproduce the project, alongside Tornasol, Haddock Films and Rohfilm. It is set to start production in 2014.
