Bay Backpedals On Alien ‘Ninja Turtles’ Comments

TeenageMutantNinjaTurtlesJust over a year ago, Michael Bay announced that his NINJA TURTLES would see the heroes we all know as the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, come from an alien race. It was the kind of news that blew up the internet and saw the internet community rally around and demand the head of Michael Bay. Well it seems now that Bay is doing some damage control, as he now says that the NINJA TURTLES will be created by the ooze, as per their original origins.

There was that quote saying that we’re making [the Ninja Turtles as] aliens. We’re not. It’s the ooze! It’s from the original source material. These are from the original writers, and I never went out to correct myself in the press. I do listen to the fans and I do want this to be authentic. I think they’re going to be really happy with this movie. When I see the digital stuff, the turtles look great.

Bay seems to have forgotten that he was the one who claimed the alien race twist in the first place. Perhaps the fan backlash and the fact that Bay’s TRANSFORMERS franchise deals with alien races was enough to convince the change. Or maybe it was never written in stone and Bay was just testing the water.

Johnathan Liebesman, who is set to direct NINJA TURTLES, also claimed that the whole thing had been a misunderstanding when he said:

Look, it’s so funny—if everyone was such a die-hard fan, they would know that the TCRI canisters where the ooze comes from. That is alien ooze. Now I’m not saying what Michael said is exactly what the movie is, because we’re sitting in a room now figuring everything out. So we don’t know, but we are like Michael said: we’re expanding it, and the expansion will be true to the mythology.

Maybe so, but Bay clearly stated that the turtles would be “from an alien race” and didn’t say they would be created by alien ooze. Still, this is all good news, and considering Bay is receiving some great praise for his latest film, PAIN AND GAIN, I’m ready to give this interpretation of the heroes in a half shell a chance.
