It was rumoured a while ago but is now confirmed that MTV are backing Scream: The TV Series, well, a pilot to begin with anyway. I’m a massive fan of Kevin Williamson’s 1996 cult-favourite SCREAM and actually think it’s still a little underrated. Craven’s classic is one of those films that became such a part of the new-slasher culture at the time, that it’s been copied and parodied all over the film world and so people can – rightfully – forget what started it all properly in the mid-to-late 90s.
I’m not entirely sure how they’d do a pilot, and I’d find it initially difficult to see any beginning without Drew Barrymore picking up the phone but who knows…it could be the perfect chance for a homage cameo. You want to know the best news though? Wes Craven is in talks to direct the pilot but they’re still on the search for writers, and with Williamson’s The Following doing so well, I wonder if he’ll be talked back into adding to that Woodsboro world.
The Scream pilot is set to be produced in association with Dimension Films and would be a one-hour project. It’s currently in the early days of further discussions but I wouldn’t mind seeing what they do, as long as we can have a bit of Neve Campbell back on screen and a clever way to bring back Ghostface. By the way, if you’ve never seen SCREAM or haven’t for a while, take a renewed look, I think you’d be pleasantly surprised!
