Focus Features are currently looking at potential casting and directors after landing the big-screen rights to E.L. James’ kinky bestselling novel, FIFTY SHADES OF GREY, early last year. They’ve hired Kelly Marcel to adapt the screenplay with everyone from Emma Watson, Mila Kunis, Ian Somerhalder, Matt Bomer and Stephen Amell linked to the leads for college virgin Anastasia Steele and billionaire playboy Christian Grey.
While we await confirmation of those officially involved, one man desperate to take the reigns is Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant. The man who brought us the excellent GOOD WILL HUNTING, TO DIE FOR and MILK, is no stranger to risqué projects having served as producer on Larry Clarke’s notorious KIDS. However, he has apparently shot a sex scene in which Anastasia loses her virginity to the Grey with MAGIC MIKE’s Alex Pettyfer and an unnamed actress in an attempt to convince the studio he’s the right man for the job.
Would fans of the novel be happy with Van Sant helming? Drop us message in the comment box below and let us know.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
