Tom Cruise hasn’t had the best of luck movie-wise in recent years. With lacklustre performances from JACK REACHER, ROCK OF AGES and KNIGHT AND DAY, it’s good to see Joseph Kosinki’s OBLIVION climbing to the top.
Over the weekend, the $120 million science fiction thriller opened in the US garnering $38.2 million over the two days, which is a surprise considering the mediocre reviews which appeared before its release. However, this huge figure is a great improvement from Cruise’s past films – only four other Cruise capers have opened higher, three of those being MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE flicks, the fourth being WAR OF THE WORLDS.
As for the rest of the world, OBLIVION had already made $61.1 million over 52 territories, with another $33.6 million taken over the weekend. The film hasn’t yet opened in China or Japan, and we all know they LOVE a good bit of sci-fi!

Considering Jazmine grew up watching CARRY ON SCREAMING, THE LION KING and JURASSIC PARK on repeat for weeks on end, it made sense for her to study film at London South Bank University. It’s also a good thing that her course requires a lot of sitting down because she’s very accident-prone. When she’s not examining her bruises, she likes pretending that she doesn’t live in Southend-On-Sea and spends hours mindlessly blogging. Favourite films include BLUE VALENTINE, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and TOY STORY 2.
