Last year’s 21 JUMP STREET turned out to be a bit of a surprise hit, showing off Channing Tatum’s comedy chops and raking in $202 million at the box office. So it’s no surprise that a sequel is on the way; even if it was announced before the original had even been released.
Sony Pictures revealed at CinemaCon today that the film is due to hit cinemas sometime in 2014, with Michael Bacall and star Jonah Hill again lending their writing talents to the script. The original film, based loosely on the 1980s TV show of the same name, sees Hill and Tatum play police officers forced to go deep undercover and back to high school in order to expose a drug ring.
The great thing about 21 JUMP STREET, in this writer’s opinion, was its reflection of modern society – high school has changed since the days of films like AMERICAN PIE, and while other comedies of less calibre are content to wallow in the stereotypes and cliques of the 1990s, 21 JUMP STREET upped the ante with a very up-to-date look at the kids of the 21st Century.
Hopefully the sequel will continue this trend when it arrives next year. Let’s just hope it’s not called 21 JUMP STREET 2…
