One ‘Tarzan’ Soars, The Other Closes Its Doors!

I wish I could correctly write the onomatopoeic form of TARZAN’s cry, but I’m afraid I’m just not capable of such a feat. I do have some news on two separate cinematic ventures, however. First of all we have a new poster for  Constantin Film’s TARZAN, which is an animated mo-cap translation of the story, with Kellan Lutz as Tarzan. The poster seems to display animation that is looking for both a realistic quality, but with hints at a cartoony nature. Not sure how I feel about those gorillas’ faces, the one on the far left looks exactly like KING KONG, which may be on purpose. The film is obviously going to take on a more modern spin with teh inclusion of helicopters.

Next up we have some sad news about Warner Bros. proposed (but never greenlit) version of TARZAN. Set to be directed by David Yates, the film has has its production offices officially shut down. The film was set to start production this year, with Alexander Skarsgard in the eponymous role and Jessica Chastain as Jane. This interpretation was also set to be a modernized tale, but would have taken place after Tarzan had been reintegrated with society. The Queen would have requested Tarzan to travel to a nation ruled over by a warlord with the hope of setting free the people and bringing peace. That’s a fascinating take on the tale, and would have been very welcome.

Tarzan would have been joined in his quest by a mercenary, a role which Samuel L. Jackson was said to be playing. Some rumours suggest that one of the many reasons the production has stalled is that the producers wanted Jamie Foxx for the role. The biggest reason though, as it usually is, was budgetary constraints. The project isn’t totally dead and may resume production sometime next year.

Constantin Film’s TARZAN will be released sometime later this year. It stars Kellan Lutz, Spencer Locke, Jaime Ray Newman, Mark Deklin, and Trevor St. John.

His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
