In 2006 300, directed by Zack Snyder made quite a dent at the box-office, and is one of the reasons that the summer blockbuster season now starts in March. Later this year we will see the release of the sidequel (as it happens at the same time as the events in the first film) 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE. The film will focus on a number of different battles happening concurrently with the events of the first film, in which an army of just 300 Spartans took on the Persian army. One of the huge battles will even be taking place at sea.
Director Noam Murro assures fans the we will experience a similar aesthetic and theme:
The few against the many is still here. It’s hundreds vs. hundreds of thousands. It’s about taking on the mightiest power of all with wisdom and tactics. It s tied visually to the original, (because of the sea battle)there is a whole different choreography of fighting and war … [It] happens over time in many different locations. The opportunities for the six distinct battles are even greater with different locations and tactics.
Murro also discussed the differences between the protagonist of the last film, Leonidas (played by Gerard Butler) and the main character of this film, Themistocles(Sullivan Stapleton).
Themistocles is battle-scarred and a warrior, but at the same time he’s a politician. He’s not the king. He has to rule in a democracy. It’s a different complexity of character. These people don’t want to fight, they even say that they are not Spartans. They are common people who have to do this to not be in under the rule of a dictator. This is not a duplicate movie or a cookie-cutter. It’s a very different story to tell in keeping with the original flavor of 300.
300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE is released on the 2nd August. It stars Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey, Jack O.Connell, and Rodrigo Santoro.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.

An unnecessary, unexpected and unwanted sequel that didn’t exist in the original graphic novel. I think I’ll pass.
