The Odd Life Of Timothy Green Review

Synopsis: A childless couple bury a box in their backyard containing all of their wishes for the perfect child. Soon, a child is born, but little Timothy Green is not all that he appears.

It’s been five year since Peter Hedges’ last endeavor, DAN IN REAL LIFE, with his collection of projects showing that he is definitely king of the kooky. His latest movie THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN proves to be no different. Told through a series of flashbacks about how a married couple have come to the position they are in, we are then introduced to the tale of how a child magically grows out of the ground to teach them both to be better parents.

While it may confuse some as to why a children’s film follows two adults, Jennifer Garner plays the ditzy but loveable mum very well. But the real dark horse is Joel Edgerton, playing a rather nerdy and fun-loving dad when we are used to seeing him beating people up. Little Timothy Green himself, CJ Adams, is the epitome of the perfect child and, with this being the second Hedges project he has starred in, you are left hoping there will be many more collaborations to come.

One of the great things about this film is how it is magical without being stuffed with CGI, sparking up the debate that has crept up recently about what really defines cinematography. THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN truly captures what it is about, using nature and locations to highlight the story as a whole, and give it a much-needed extra push from cliché to, well, lovely.

With the premise of the story sounding like a cliché in itself, there are problems from the get-go, especially when we are supposed to believe that a children’s film is about an adult couple. But like the moral of the film itself, you will learn not to judge straightaway but wait and see how things play out in the end. It was brave of Disney to give the film a theatrical release when it probably would have played out just as well as a Disney original movie, but it is a family film that will capture the hearts of old and young alike.

3 Stars THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN is released in UK cinemas on April 5th.
