Del Toro Loves The F@#* Out Of Hypothetical ‘Godzilla’ Vs. ‘Pacific Rim’ Idea

Pacific Rim Godzilla Image 2I’m a very excited little boy right now, because big-ass monsters are returning to our screens over the next couple of years, and that means awesomeness on an immense scale. Enough of these superhero films (not really, I love those too), let’s see some absolute carnage take place on the big screen. Leading the charge are Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, who are working together on this year’s PACIFIC RIM and next year’s GODZILLA reboot. PACIFIC RIM will see humans fighting against monsters using giant robots in a post-apocalyptic setting, while GODZILLA is about a giant monster lizard smashing stuff up.

With the same production companies behind each film, and the similar storylines involved, the guys over at Collider sat down with PACIFIC RIM director Guillermo Del Toro, and asked how he would feel about a hypothetical GODZILLA vs. Jaeger (the robots used in PACIFIC RIM) movie. Del Toro basically said he is all for the idea in theory, but has no idea how the two worlds would fit together seamlessly, as well as hinting that the already announced PACIFIC RIM sequel is going in a different direction:

So far with the sequel, what we’re writing, what we’re creating, is very different, so there are no plans. Hypothetically, I would love the fuck out of it.  I would love to see a Jaeger and GODZILLA duke it out.  That would be too much for the human brain.  But I don’t think there are plans on that.  I don’t even know what direction they’re taking GODZILLA in.  I know somewhat that it’s grounded differently.  PACIFIC RIM, my aspiration was, the color, the saturation of color, was almost an acid-drip version of the heavy-metal coloring that I loved when Richard Corben was working there, when [Jean-Claude] Forest was working there.  Super bright, super saturated, the crazy color and aesthetic.  And GODZILLA is more realistic, somewhat.  That’s my thinking.  That’s what I’ve heard.  I don’t even know which way they’re going.

So it’s nice to imagine the two worlds coming together at some point. Perhaps later down the line when the respective franchises need a little boost we’ll see a crossover, but until then GODZILLA already has a huge back catalogue to be working his way through.

PACIFIC RIM is released 12th July 2013. It stars Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day. GODZILLA will be released 16th May 2014. It stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Ken Watanabe, Bryan Cranston, and David Strathairn.
