Who’s Being (Snake) Eyed For ‘Escape From New York’ Reboot?

It appears Tom Hardy and Jason Statham are favourites for the lead role, at least amongst those at Silver Pictures and Studio Canal, after the two companies landed the remake rights to John Carpenter’s cult action classic, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. The role of wise-cracking bad-ass Snake Plissken was made famous by the brilliant Kurt Russell in 1981, as well as the bonkers 1997 sequel, ESCAPE FROM L.A.

Both studios have united to remake Carpenter’s film as an origin story and hope to continue it as a new franchise/trilogy. The deal came about after New Line’s decision to let the rights lapse following their own previous attempt at a remake that saw Breck Eisner and Gerard Butler sign on as director and star, before the project eventually collapsed.

It’s rumoured they’ve targeted Hardy and Statham for the lead but THE TRANSPORTER star appears to more likely candidate with Hardy recently taking over another 1980s action icon in George Miller’s MAD MAX: FURY ROAD.

We’ll keep you posted if any confirmation comes through? Would either of them be your choice for the patch?

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

There is no question that Tom Hardy would be the best choice. He is a much, much better actor, is more charismatic, better looking, better everything.

Why do they insist on rebooting everything these days? John Carpenter’s gem certainly doesn’t need a remake. Plus, Snake IS Kurt Russell. I’d rather watch the original for the umpteenth time than any remake they might come up with, no matter who stars in it.
