Ryan Gosling has had a few really prolific years with a string of great performances in quality films like CRAZY STUPID LOVE, DRIVE and BLUE VALENTINE. However there has been as suspiciously low amount of films on his slate for the past little while and now it appears that it sadly isn’t a coincidence. Speaking in a recent interview, Gosling says:
I’ve been doing it too much, I’ve lost perspective on what I’m doing. I think it’s good for me to take a break and reassess why I’m doing it and how I’m doing it. And I think this is probably a good way to learn about that. I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does. The more opportunities I’m given, the more I learn about how easy it is to (expletive) it up. You fight for freedom and then you get it, and then you have enough rope to hang yourself. It’s like trying to exercise some restraint because I do have so much freedom.
Gosling however won’t completely disappear from the film industry as he is gearing up for his directorial debut, HOW TO CATCH A MONSTER. On top of that, there are a few films of his yet to be released both of them being reunions. One with BLUE VALENTINE director Derek Cianfrance, the upcoming THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, as well as one with DRIVE director Nicolas Winding Refn which is ONLY GOD FORGIVES. Gosling is a huge acting talent and he will be missed, but if a self-imposed break can recharge his batteries and stop him from quitting the profession outright, it is probably for the best. Esben Evans is the Danish contingent on this site. He enjoys films, swearing a lot, and a nice pair of slacks.
