Marvel’s ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ Casts Drax The Destroyer With WWE Star

A few weeks ago we reported GAMES OF THRONES and BULLET TO THE HEAD actor Jason Momoa was being eyed for the supporting role of Drax The Destroyer, amongst other names, in Marvel’s interplanetary comic-book caper, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. The project is a risky one for Marvel as their property is perhaps not as familiar as their iconic superheroes. Even more surprising is they’ve trusted the project on relative indie fave James Gunn, whose previous works, SUPER and SLITHER, as enjoyable as they were, were hardly the stuff of big-budget blockbuster geeks.

With ZERO DARK THIRTY’s Chris Pratt now confirmed as the lead, Peter Quill aka Star Lord, the half human, half alien space cop, casting is now underway on fellow Guardians. However, it won’t be Momoa taking the role of the hulking, green-skinned Drax. Former WWE star Dave Bautista has beaten off competition to land the much-coveted role. Those non-wresting fans may know him from straight-to-DVD dross, HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN and THE SCORPION KING 3: BATTLE FOR REDEMPTION. Last year saw him land more high-profile roles in RZA’s THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS and Vin Diesel’s upcoming sci-fi sequel RIDDICK.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is set for cinemas 1st August 2014, with fellow team members Rocket Raccoon and Groot expected to be realised via a mix of motion-capture and CGI.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
