The Great Gatsby release date pushed back to summer 2013

Time to sort out your best suits ladies and gents because the biggest film festival is only a couple of months away and it has been announced that the adaptation of  F. Scott Fitzgerald’s THE GREAT GATSBY will be opening the 66th Festival de Cannes. The film, directed by Baz Luhrmann, will be premiering May 15th at Grand Theatre Lumiere of the Palais des Festivals. It will be shown out of competition as part of the Official Selection.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jay Gatsby, whose life story is told through by his friend Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire). Carraway starts to get drawn into Gatsby circle and becomes a witness to obsession and tragedy.  The film also stars Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher.

Baz Luhrmann has expressed his excitement about THE GREAT GATSBY opening and had this to say:

“It is a great honor for all those who have worked on The Great Gatsby to open the Cannes Film Festival. We are thrilled to return to a country, place and festival that has always been so close to our hearts, not only because my first film, Strictly Ballroom, was screened there 21 years ago, but also because F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside St. Raphael.”

Other guests expected to attend the opening include Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan and Jay-Z, who composed the movie soundtrack.

Seems like Baz Luhrmann has done it again. After Moulin Rouge and its absurd modern soundtrack, he’s back with yet another period movie scored by… wait for it… Jay Z! Too bad, this could’ve been good.
